KM12 is Rotterdam’s newest multidisciplinary collective, bringing together artists and makers from across a variety of fields: sculpting, painting, filmmaking, photography, writing, ceramics, wax art, coffee brewing, and even thrifting.
Based in the former Nicolaasschool building in the heart of the Tussendijken neighborhood, KM12 functions as a shared workspace, meeting point, and cultural laboratory. Each classroom has been turned into a creative atelier with its own story, where every individual can create, teach, and specialize in their craft. Together, we bring the spirit of open learning and exploration to benefit from each other and build the collective into an asset for Rotterdam’s creative scene.
Rooted in collaboration and experimentation, the collective connects artistic practices with everyday life, fostering exchange between disciplines and the local community while giving new life to a historic space.

The building now home to KM12 opened in 1926 as the A.W.F. Idenburgschool, named after Alexander Willem Frederik Idenburg, a name we can't repeat without acknowledging what it represents. He was governor of Suriname and later governor-general of the Dutch East Indies. His rule paired paternalistic reforms with harsh military repression and the exile of independence leaders. It was later renamed the Nicolaasschool before eventually standing empty. Today the space is held under leegstandbeheer (antikraak), with the building expected to pass into gemeente ownership in the near future.
